Description

Bread not Profits – The Limerick Soviet 1919 - 2019

A new play is to take place in the historic and partially derelict Cleeve’s Factory to commemorate the centenary of the Limerick Soviet.  In April 1919, the Limerick Soviet saw a city-wide strike against the British Empire, and a 14,000 strong workers army, armed with a printing press ensured access points to Limerick were cut off, leading to food shortages, and eventually the issuing of their own tender, the Soviet shilling.

With a script by Mike Finn (Pigtown, The Unlucky Cabin Boy), direction by Terry O’Donovan (On the Wire), and music by David Blake (Brad Pitt Light Orchestra), Bread Not Profits is a unique, dramatic celebration of one of the city’s proudest moments.

As part of the celebrations, a large exhibition of Limerick Inside Out International Practicum student’s coursework will be held in a designated space where the audience gathers before the play’s performance each evening.  A set designer is assisting in the design layout of the UL International Practicum student’s work for the exhibition, as the display needs to conceptually align with the play.  Launching on the 10th April the exhibition will remain in situ during the play’s run from April 16-27.  There will be significant effort required to set up and display student work for this exhibition.

UL is partnering with Bread not Profits, taking up an opportunity to exhibit student work (providing a modern-day representation of the significance of the international view as it relates to the local), while also offering to support the production team in managing the movement of the audience for the performances.

Return Limerick city bus fares will be covered for volunteer students.
