Description

The volunteer will help support students of Product Design and Technology in the maintenance and safe use of industrial and commercial level sewing machines.

Volunteers will be responsible for providing guidance on proper use of the machines, ensuring students are using machines safely and sharing knowledge on sustainable practices when choosing textiles, techniques and design choices.

Applicants require the following:

  • Be in year 1 to 4 of the BSc in Product Design.
  • Advise lecturer interest to apply before applying.
  • Be in the studio during term time.

Is training provided?:Yes

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

  • Support lecturers when providing guidance on the use of both industrial and commercial sewing machines.
  • Oversee safe use of machines by students.
  • Advise on maintanence/ trouble shooting of machines.
  • Help ensure the upkeep of the of machines and maintain working order.
  • Provide support to students during their design process while using the machine.

  • Receive detailed training on how to maintain both industrial/ commercial sewing machines.
  • Work closely with faculty to learn about using sewing machines and their potential in the design process
  • Opportunity to develop specialist skills relating to machine sewing and textiles in the design process.

Details of time commitment needed for role:
Flexible, Monday to Friday between 9 to 5, during term-time

Minimum time commitment per week:
2 hours p/week

Additional screening required for this role::
Students must apply to this role and to Bernard Hartigan for the hours to be eligible for the PVA. Students should forward confirmation from Bernard or their lecturer to school.design@ul.ie to be eligible for this opportunity.
