Description

The An Síol education programme provides free tuition for second level students in the North West inner city Dublin, prioritising Junior and Leaving Certificate students. The students are paired with a volunteer tutor for an hour long one-to-one session on a weekly basis. The tuition takes place in a local school on Manor Street on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6-7 p.m. or 7-8 p.m. Tutors and their students meet in the canteen area of the school and are supervised and supported by An Siol’s education services staff. The program runs from October to May, excluding school holidays.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

An Síol volunteer tutors are:

  • Over 18
  • Enthusiastic and enjoy working with young people
  • Have a good knowledge of at least one secondary level subject to a minimum of ordinary Junior Cert level
  • Understand and emphasize with the stresses of falling behind in school
  • Dedicated to helping a young person through a stressful time in their lives.
  • Willing to commit to 1 or 2 hours a weeks from October to May excluding school holidays.

Details of time commitment needed for role:
1 or 2 hours on a Monday or Tuesday evening during the school term from October to May.

Minimum time commitment per week:
1 hour p/week

Additional screening required for this role:
All volunteers will receive certified Child Protection training and a reference can be provided. Subject to Garda Clearance, an informal interview, and the return of two references volunteers will be invited to an induction evening in September to meet An Síol staff and fellow volunteers. Volunteers are matched with students from late September and tuition usually begins in mid-October.
