Description

We are looking for a few volunteers to help us read submitted essay for our Secondary-School Essay Competition. Essays will be submitted by 27th Feb. and then we have two weeks to read and decide our winners.

If volunteer is accepted, we will meet in Week 5 or an hour of training. Once essays are submitted, volunteers will need to read the essays and then meet together to pick the winners in Week 7. Volunteers must be available to read and meet during these weeks.

The primary purpose of our competition is to give students the opportunity to write persuasively on social issues that are relevant to them in preparation for the argumentative writing they will perform later at third level. In addition, the competition highlights the Regional Writing Centre’s commitment to a life-long learning approach to writing, helping students to develop strategies to become more confident, critical and autonomous writers, able to write persuasively in all contexts, whether academic, professional or personal.

Applicants must be good readers. Good readers

o    Read fluently, their attention on understanding the text (in this case, the argument).

o    Read with a purpose: in this case, with the judging criteria in mind.

o    Able to identify the text structure, in this case, the argumentative framework, how the argument is structured.

o    Monitor their own understanding and, when their understanding is frustrated, identify reasons why, determining whether it was a reader error or a writer error.

o    Creates mental notes and summaries of their understandings of the text’s message, making special note of parts of the text that don’t seem to contribute to the argument or, worse, undermine the argument.

o    Makes predictions, when reading, of what the writer will say next and make notes about the predictability/non-predictability of the argument.

o    Edits their thoughts as they reads: distinguishing between important and trivial ideas and integrating new with existing information.
