UL - Department of Psychology
Limerick
About Us:We are seeking students interested in volunteering their time to get involved in extracurricular, interdisciplinary practice
AIPEC is an extracurricular, case-based learning opportunity for students. A team of students from various health discipline backgrounds represent their university (UL, UCC, UoG, UCD, TCD, RCSI, QUB and University of Ulster) and, in response to a set health-related case study, have 8 mins per team to deliver a presentation on how best to manage treatment for the patient. There is a panel of judges who ask clarifying questions and, by applying a scoring rubric, agree on the winning team.
Students eligible to compete in AIPEC must be currently enrolled in a health science programme and be pre-registration (i.e. not currently registered and in full-time employment associated with their discipline).
Following expression of interest in participating, you will join a multidisciplinary team with students from other UL health disciplines, combining subject knowledge from psychology, medicine, paramedicine, nursing, physiotherapy, dietetics, SLT, and OT, where possible. Each team must have interdisciplinary representation, which may vary from team to team. Indeed, teams from each university will differ depending on the disciplines taught at the respective university. You will then work with your team using various communication modes (e.g., in person, online), consulting with a UL academic mentor, to prepare a response to the case study. Depending on interest and the number of teams, we will hold an internal competition/heat next semester, where UL teams will deliver their presentation to a panel. It will then be decided which team will progress to represent UL at the national competition hosted at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in March 2026.
