Description

Brighter Communities Worldwide are and Irish charity and a Kenyan NGO working with communities across Kericho county in Kenya. We work with people to support them in identifying their needs and to deliver sustainable development programmes focusing on health, education and econcomic empowerment. We have been facilitating volunteer team to Kenya since 2002.

Volunteers work alongside local teams, staff and community members on project such as - 

  • Facilitating programmes on Life Skills, Business, Sexual & Reproductive Health, and Remote Emergency Care
  • Installing smokeless stoves to improve health and the environment
  • Supporting school workshops through our Healthy Schools programme
  • Sharing their professional expertise — medical, IT, media, and more
  • Contributing as a student volunteer in many areas, for example - nursing, medicine, healthcare, business.

'Harambee' is a swahili word meaning working together. We call our volunteer teams 'Harambee) This is an opportunity to learn, grow, and stand in solidarity with communities facing real challenges — while making a lasting impact together.

Is training provided?:Yes

Please note that Garda Vetting is required for this position which will be processed with you after you apply.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

Volunteers will be expected to undertake 3 days training in advance in person and by zoom to prepare for this placement.  Volunteers will need travel insurance. We will advise on the vaccinations needed to keep safe and healthy. We will advise on all preparations including electronic travel visa, culture, flight bookings, context etc.

Tasks in Kenya are varied and include facilitating community and school workshops, installing smokeless stoves, accompanying health teams on outreach clinics, placement in hospitals for medical and nursing students, involvement in delivery of business trainings as part of economic empowerment programme, working alongside local volunteers and staff in the day to day delivery of sustainable develpoment programmes.

Details of time commitment needed for role:
3 days for trainings (including time when back in Ireland for debrief) Harambee 2026 has options of 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks or 4 weeks
