About Us:Student education
As announced on Brightspace recently, we are launching a pilot peer mentoring programme this semester for UL Mechanical Engineering students. All students will be offered the opportunity to join a peer mentoring group, with each group expected to include at least one student from Years 2–5 of the programme.
The aims of the programme are to:
1. Build stronger links between students across different years.
2. Enable earlier-year students to learn from the experiences of those further on in the programme.
3. Strengthen the sense of community within Mechanical Engineering.
As 4th and 5th year students, I am aware that you are currently very busy; however, your participation is crucial to the success of this initiative, and I would really appreciate if you could give up an hour of your time. Your experience, insights, and perspective are exactly what younger students benefit from most.
In addition to supporting younger students, volunteering as a mentor is also a valuable experience for your own professional development. It provides strong material for your CV and future interviews, demonstrating leadership, communication, and the ability to support others—skills that are valued by engineering employers.
I am therefore inviting you to volunteer to attend one or more of the peer mentoring sessions scheduled for the evening of Monday, March 9th.
Pizza and soft drinks will be provided at all sessions as a small thank you for your time.
Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:
At the peer mentoring session(s) you will be expected to provide younger students on the programme with information based on you experiences as a student in mechanical engieering and to answer any questions that they might have.
Benefits of Volunteering:
Volunteering as a mentor is also a valuable experience for your own professional development. It provides strong material for your CV and future interviews, demonstrating leadership, communication, and the ability to support others—skills that are valued by engineering employers.
