Recognition & Awards

DCU places great value on students' efforts to engage with communities, creating positives environments and addressing societal issues. DCU recognises the contributions of student volunteers in a number of ways.

The Uaneen Award

The Uaneen Award is a unique scheme that formally recognises the work done and learning acquired by final year students both on and off campus, from working with clubs and societies to volunteering time with local GAA clubs and/or charities. Extra-curricular and volunteer activity in general, excluding experiences that offer economic gain, fit the criteria for applying for the Uaneen Award. DCU is the first third-level institution in the Republic of Ireland to reward extracurricular activity in such a manner. The Unaneen Award is part of a scheme of recognition for student volunteers that covers the entire undergraduate experience.

The Uaneen Award is only available to final year students and is a year long programme. Depending on your degree programme, the Uaneen Award can be either a contributing 5 credit elective or a non-contributing optional additional 5 credit module. In both cases, successful completion means that you will be awarded credits that are included in the degree parchment. The Uaneen Award is managed and administered by DCU's Office of Student Life and is endorsed by IBEC.

The President's Award for Engagement

The President’s Award for Engagement celebrates the impact of the engagement of DCU students with the life of the wider community. This award has been a longstanding tradition at DCU, organised by the Office of Civic Engagement in partnership with the Office of the University President. It is an esteemed award, adding much to the CV of the winner. This award focuses on engagement, including volunteering, taking place off campus only - the winner will have shown demonstrated great commitment to helping, support and/or bettering the local community

There are two awards, the President's Award and the Special Merit Award. Students are nominated for their outstanding engagement, including volunteering activity, external to the unversity, with the winners being selected by a panel of judges. The winners recieve a special medal, certificate and a cash prize. The Award ceremony takes place at the end of the academic year, with staff and students invited to the award ceremony. It is one of the highlights of the university
