Volunteering Bio - Bronagh O’ Hanlon

16/02/2022

My name is Brónagh O’Hanlon, I am a 3rd year Electronic & Computer Engineering student. I have taken up many volunteering roles during my time here in UL. I am a class representative for my course. As a class rep I liaise between my classmates and our lecturers to help communicate any issues or information which needs attending too.

I was previously events officer for the WiSTEM2D society, and recently made president. This society aims to promote women in STEM, and to create a safe and welcoming space for aspiring females pursuing a career in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics).

More recently, I have become a student ambassador for UL, the aim of this role, is to show off all UL has to offer for future students, and to let the world know about our state-of-the-art facilities, and excellent student life.

I was also a mental health crisis volunteer with 50808, this is a remarkable government funded organization, which provides a listening and empathic ear for those experiencing a range of emotions and feelings such as depression, grief, isolation, loneliness, anxiety etc.

I wanted to become emersed in volunteering, as for me, it is important to use my time to better the world, for both myself and those around me. I wanted to try make as many people’s as possible day a little easier – or simply put a smile on their face and getting involved in volunteering is a sure way to do just that.

If anyone is thinking of getting involved in volunteering – my advice would be to find something you are passionate about – and go for it. Trust me when I say, you will get much more out of it, than you will ever put in!!
