Description

This Voluntary opportunity is open to students who are willing to commit their time to support a young  person through the Big Brother Big Sister Programme.

Big Brother Big Sister is an internationally renowned youth mentoring programme that forms supportive friendships between a young person and an adult volunteer.  The Programme Officer matches a young person (10-18 years), in need of friendship and support, to a caring adult volunteer mentor.  All volunteers are carefully screened and receive training and support throughout the  match. Matches are of the same gender, meet weekly, for an hour or two, and the initial commitment is for one year.  Weekly meetings include activities that they both enjoy like sports,computers games,cooking, music, walks, art and craft etc, and during these activities a friendship is formed.  

Is training provided?: Yes

Please note that Garda Vetting is required for this position which will be processed with you after you apply.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

Recruiting Volunteers in Westmeath and Offaly 

Maintain communication throughout the match with appointed staff person

Skills required for this role:

Patience, Empathy, open minded, non judgmental & caring attitude

Has an interest in working with young people to help them make better life choices

Details of time commitment needed for role:
Volunteer arranges to meet at a time and day suitable to both the Volunteer and the young person

Minimum time commitment per week:
1 hour p/week

Additional screening required for this role:
Application form and reference checks, Garda Vetting, Interview, home visit, Child protection and volunteer induction training Successful applicant formal notification of acceptance on to the programme .
