Voluntary Service International (VSI)& is the Irish branch of Service Civil International, a worldwide peace movement that began in 1920. We work to promote peace, social justice, sustainable development and intercultural understanding. We do this through volunteering activities internationally and in Ireland. VSI is a registered charity in Ireland (Charity Number: CHY 9220).

Description: Parque Educativo San Jose (San José Educational Park of the Ministry of Environment and Natural History), is a Center for Environmental Education and training culture that encourages a participatory society towards the conservation of natural resources in high-Tseltal Tsotsil region of Chiapas.Located 8 km from the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, on the campus of San Jose Rosal municipality of Zinacantan. The San José Educational Park is an area of 16 hectares of pine-oak forest little disturbed and ecologically important in terms of conservation of flora and fauna.

Type of Work: The work will be focused on maintenance of the park like rehabilitation of public spaces (rest areas, playgrounds, etc.), enclosures of animals, development of trails, you can also participate in the daily activities of the park, depending on the dynamic group

Accommodation: Volunteers will stay at the project facilities in a shared mixed room, and must bring their own sleeping bag and blankets. They have access to services such as hot water, bathrooms and kitchen. The camps include three meals a day in standard quantities (300 grams per serving), additional quantities of this should be covered by the volunteer. Any special dietary requirements should be informed before the start of camp.

Language: In this project the official language is English, however, a basic level of Spanish would be ideal for volunteers to enroll in an intensive program of learning Spanish,or any other international indigenous Mayan language at school in La casa en el árbol Cultural Institute is invited. The courses may be taken one week before the commencement of work on the project.

Approximate Location: The park belongs to the municipality of Zinacantan. It is 8 km from the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas (approximately 15 minutes with public transport.

Notes: BEFORE APPLYING. Being in wooded area, mosquito bites and insects are inevitable for this reason we ask you to be aware and to know if you're not allergic to the sting.

Details of time commitment needed for role:
This is a two week volunteer commitment in mexico, however Spanish is not required.

10+ hour p/week
