Description

Purpose

To lead max 1 hr, accessible, TU Dublin community-based walks for participants on the Relay for Life Challenge where participants wish to work up to completing their daily 5km walk in each campus.

• Welcome the walking group and give a brief talk before starting off, including information on the walking route and potential hazards/risks.

• As a front leader, indicate to walkers when to start their brisk walking, when to cool down and, if necessary, when to change direction.

• As a back leader, carry a mobile phone. Ensure that everyone completes the walk, or if anyone needs to stop early, ensure they get back to the start safely.

• Assist with developing a walk programme and help promote TU Dublin Relay for Life Challenge

Walks will take place in and around each campus


Training and support:

All Walk Leaders will be required to attend a workshop delivered by Dublin City Council in Lower House, Grangegorman – and lunch will be provided, where they will give top tips, practical advice and a run through of what is required and to give you the confidence to lead a walk!!

Studentvolunteering.ie – Student Walk Leaders can log their hours and get a pillar of the community cert – great for CV!!

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

Specific tasks and duties

 • Commit to leading walks on a regular basis.

• Research and plan routes for walks, and identify any potential hazards/risks.

 • Be familiar with the hazard identification/risk assessment and the route you are walking.

• Keep a written register for each walk. For City Campus - participants need to pre book their

   place on the walk through Activities Portal – www.tudublin.ie/activities/

  • Good communication skills.
  • Friendly, sociable personality.
  • Reliability and punctuality.
  • Non-judgemental attitude.
  • Willingness to undergo basic training and work as part of a team with other leaders.
  • Complete Irish Heart Foundation Community online Walking Leader Course (30 mins)
