Requirements:We're looking for volunteers who are patient, kind and caring.


Saint Joseph's Shankill is the only home in Ireland solely dedicated to dementia care. We are a Butterfly Home which means we focus on feelings and creating a home from home for the people in our care. 

Your role is to visit a person in our care on a regular basis in their lodge. On your visits you will spend time with your ‘Buddy’ and make moments matter for them. This could include: chatting about current events, their family, their occupation; going for a walk in the grounds of Saint Joseph’s; singing songs; sharing your hobbies. You might even have the same hobby so you can share that such as doing some DIY, arts and crafts, sports. 

Is training provided?: Yes

Please note that Garda Vetting is required for this position.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

Spend time with your ‘Buddy’ and make moments matter for them. The people in our care have lots of life experience and they love to see new people coming to visit them. An hour a week would be a great way for you to make a difference in someone's life. 

Skills required for this role:

Caring and friendly attitude. Feelings matter most in Saint Joseph's Shankill and we want to create special moments for all our day care attendees so they know that they still matter.

Details of time commitment needed for role:
One hour per week (during the day/evenings or at weekends)

Minimum time commitment per week:
1 hour p/week
