Claddagh Watch Patrol

Claddagh Watch patrol volunteer - night time patrols safeguarding the city of Galway

Please note that Garda Vetting is required for this position.
Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:
Nightly patrols from 10pm until approx 4am on the bridges and waterways of Galway City in an effort to prevent accidents and deaths by suicide whilst promoting water safety. Assisting individuals that may be distressed, disorientated, depressed or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In the event that someone enters the water, it is our job to contact the appropriate emergency service and give clear, concise details on the incident.
Skills required for this role:
Observation, empathy, calm manner, able to work in a team. You do not need to be able to swim as our volunteers never enter the water. Mental health and First Aid skills are of benefit but not essential. Training opportunities will be ongoing.
Details of time commitment needed for role:
Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights with extra patrols during festivals, events, exam results etc. ONLY 1 patrol each month is required although anyone who wishes to do more may do so.
Minimum time commitment per week:
1 hour p/week
Additional screening required for this role:
Application form and Garda Vetting form to be completed. ALIVE - NUI Galway student volunteering programme will support you to do this with Claddagh Watch. There will be a €10 fee for the vetting. Previous vetting clearance is not relevant to this role. Students are provided with the funding for the Garda Vetting process. Copies of any Mental Health or First Aid certificates required if any.
