Autumn marks the start of the new sports year for Special Olympics athletes in our network of 313 clubs across the island of Ireland.

Special Olympics Eastern Region has 70 clubs. These are run in Dublin, Wicklow coastal towns as far as Arklow, and some of Kildare (Leixlip, Celbridge, Maynooth).

While each club varies on the roles that are available, each club will require volunteers. These roles vary from the following:

  • Club Management Roles
    • Chairperson
    • Secretary
    • Treasurer
    • Club Safeguarding Officer
    • Membership Officer
    • Sports Officer
  • Coaching Roles
    • Head Coach
    • Coach
    • Assistant Coach
  • General Volunteer roles
    • Assisting in registration, etc.

Through sport, athletes develop both physically and emotionally. They make new friends, discover their dreams, and feel included.  As a volunteer, you enable athletes to achieve, not only in sport, but in life too. Special Olympics values our volunteers and we need your involvement in many areas of the programme.

Volunteering is fun and rewarding. Your contribution will help change the lives of our athletes and it can change your life too!

Is training provided?: Yes

Please note that Garda Vetting is required for this position.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

Depending on the role, volunteers will be asked to assist in the general running of the club.

Skills required for this role:

Role dependant skills will vary. 

In general volunteers are required to be patient, enthusiastic and committed to helping our athletes reach their goals. 

Details of time commitment needed for role:
Varying depending on club but usually an hour or two and evening or weekend a week.

Minimum time commitment per week:
1 hour p/week
