Dublin City University (DCU) is situated in North Dublin which presents with high levels of unemployment and social exclusion. To combat this, DCU launched an outreach centre called DCU in the Community which is based in the Shangan Road Neighborhood Centre in the heart of Ballymun.

The overall mission of DCU in the Community “to provide educational opportunities to local people in North Dublin in order to increase participation levels and to promote equality in Third Level education”. DCU in the Community recognises the individual talents of each student and will develop a curriculum based on the student’s needs. This university outreach centre also helps promote sustainable community development and serves as a bridge to the resources of DCU and the wider higher education system.

With this role, you will work with DCU in the Community Manager and Office of Civic Engagement team on raising the social media profile and online visibility for DCU in the Community. This will mainly include setting up and managing our Twitter account, as well as writing occasional short press releases for our website.

We are looking for someone who can commit to minimum one semester (ideally academic year), for 1-2 hours per week. This is flexible as the volunteer work will be done online/remotely.

Welcome training will be provided.

The opportunity could suit students pursuing Gaisce Awards (community involvement or personal skill strands).

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

  • Setting up and running DCU in the Community Twitter account (schedule to be agreed e.g. 2 tweets per week, daily monitoring)
  • Preparing short press releases for DCU News and Office of Civic Engagement websites (1 per 4-6 weeks)
  • Liaising with DCU in the Community Manager and Office on Civic Engagement team on upcoming events and projects (e.g. classes and activities at DCU in the Community centre, seminars, Civic Engagement Forum meetings) to decide how best to promote them on social media

Skills required for this role:

  • Good working knowledge of social media communications, particularly Twitter 
  • Ability to create engaging social media content
  • Strong writing skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of Hootsuite or other social media management platform is desirable

Details of time commitment needed for role:
Flexible, online volunteering Minimum one semester (ideally academic year), 1-2 hours per week

Minimum time commitment per week:
1 hour p/week
