Global Action Plan (GAP) is an Irish charity with the aim of creating sustainable communities across Ireland. Our mission is to support people to live more sustainable lifestyles, by offering practical yet creative solutions that inspire people to act and change their long-term consumption habits. 


As part of our suite of programmes, we run a range of environmental education programmes working with schools and community groups both in the classroom and outdoors. GAP’s community garden in Ballymun, the Green Living and Sustainability Centre (GLAS), is also an accredited Discovery Primary Science and Maths centre and we run some of our workshops in the garden. 


The GAP Environmental Education Internship is to provide support to the Environmental Education department in GAP, which will involve desk based work, working on our outdoor education activities, including regular activities in our community garden.

Terms and conditions

A daily stipend will be provided for the internship

Minimum 3-month placement.

21-28 hours per week (to be agreed with the candidate).

Garda vetting applies to this position (GAP will apply on your behalf).

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors under variable weather conditions.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

Duties and Responsibilities

Assisting with the daily running of GAP’s environmental, global citizenship and biodiversity focused education programmes. 

Taking part in educational workshops in schools and the outdoors. 

Developing educational resources and promotional materials to support GAP’s 


Development and research to support GAP’s programmes.

Lead parts of workshops and working with various members of the community.

Supporting Community Gardeners in Community Garden activities as required. 

Participate in public events and programmes.

Assist in admin and data compiling of workshop-related materials.

Skills required for this role:


A Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, natural sciences, horticulture, agriculture, or ecology is strongly favoured; and/or equivalent work experience in a related field.

Ability to work independently in a motivated manner, with good organisational and time management skills.

Enthusiasm for engaging and leading the community, including volunteers, community groups, and school groups.

Comfortable working both outdoors and indoors.

Competency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Fluency in the English language.


Desirable skills and qualifications

A background in environmental science, community development, education or a related field.

Knowledge of environmental issues and/or the Irish primary and post-primary education system.

Interest in working with young people.

Good interpersonal and communication skills.

Good organisational skills.

Excellent computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or similar.

Experience/good eye for design with regards to workshop materials (presentations, teacher toolkits, documentation, etc.)

Details of time commitment needed for role:
Flexible hours between Monday and Friday to be agreed by candidate

Minimum time commitment per week:
10+ hour p/week
