Global Action Plan (GAP) is an Irish charity with the aim of creating sustainable communities across Ireland. Our mission is to support people to live more sustainable lifestyles, by offering practical yet creative solutions that inspire people to act and change their long-term consumption habits. 

As part of our suite of programmes, we run a range of environmental education programmes with schools and community groups both in the classroom and outdoors in local parks and in GLAS, our community garden in Ballymun. GLAS is also an accredited Discovery Primary Science and Maths centre. 

The GAP Environmental Education Intern will provide support to the Environmental Education department, and will involve desk based work as well as working on our outdoor education activities as part of our Park Stewardship and Little Green Fingers programmes.

Terms and conditions

This is an unpaid internship position.

Work may be hybrid, as we are not fully returned to the office. 

Minimum 8-week placement, exact dates to be agreed with the candidate.

14-24 hours per week, to be agreed with the candidate

Garda vetting will be required as much of the work will be with young people.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with our education team on our Erasmus+ project. This will include:
    • Researching and referencing facts and online resources (videos, reports, narratives, etc.)
    • Assisting in the development of educational resources to be used in primary and secondary schools across Ireland.
    • Assist in planning a teacher training session in Norway in collaboration with project partners.
    • Communicate progress and collaborate with European project partners and Irish participants
  • Assist in endline evaluation of our community education and schools education programmes. This will involve
    • Reviewing programme data to develop narratives for reporting to funders
    • Contacting previous participants & organisations involved in the programme to research key programme questions.
  • Write a blog entry for the website on the experience of working with GAP.
  • Support in the delivery of environmental education workshops in schools and community settings. This could include:
    • Preparing and co-planning workshops.
    • Assisting in the delivery of the Park Stewardship programme May-June 2022 with Ballymun schools, which will involve preparing and leading nature-based games and activities with primary school children.
  • Creating content for social media.
  • Development and research to support GAP’s programmes.

  • Assisting in the collection of programme data using existing systems.
  • Support in the delivery of global citizenship education workshops in schools and community settings. This could include: 
    • Preparing and co-planning workshops.
    • Creating content for social media.
    • Assisting in the collection of programme data using existing systems.

You will receive a full induction into the organisation and each specific department prior to undertaking any duties. As a member of our small staff team, your input will be valued and welcomed, and where possible we encourage you to make suggestions and provide feedback to staff. You will report to the GAP Education Programme Coordinator, who will oversee your work and provide support and supervision during your placement.

Please note the above duties are not exhaustive and a level of flexibility is required in this role.

Skills required for this role:

Essential skills and qualifications

  • Ability to work independently in a motivated manner, with good organisational and time management skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and excellent command of the English language.
  •  Excellent attention to detail.
  • Experience and competency in the use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and Google products (Drive, Docs, Meet).
  • Enthusiasm for engaging and leading the community, including volunteers, community groups, and school groups.

  • Comfortable working both outdoors and indoors.

Desirable skills and qualifications

  • A background in education, environmental studies, community work, social work, or research into related fields is a distinct advantage.
  • Experience working with young people in outdoor education is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of environmental issues and a passion to make a change.
  • Interest in, and affinity for, the work of community and not-for-profit organisations.

Details of time commitment needed for role:
Flexible hours between Monday and Friday to be agreed by candidate

Minimum time commitment per week:
10+ hour p/week
