Description

‘Mangrove for Java’ targets villages at risk and areas located in coastal areas on Java Island. It has been organised in cooperation with local fishing and farming communities since 2015 and aims to preserve coastal areas impacted by global climate change. The project aims to preserve natural diversity and protect the sea shore from erosion that was caused by removal of mangroves in the 70’s-80s as well as strong waves.

Approximate Location: Pekalongan City, Central Java, Indonesia.

Voluntary Service International (VSI) is the Irish branch of Service Civil International, a worldwide peace movement that began in 1920.  We work to promote peace, social justice, sustainable development and intercultural understanding.  We do this through volunteering activities internationally and in Ireland.  VSI is a registered charity in Ireland (Charity Number: CHY 9220).

Is training provided?: Yes

Please note that Garda Vetting is required for this position.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

Planting mangrove and other trees on the beaches, raising awareness about the  environment with local communities, school and university visits delivering environmental education, running a ‘green campaign’ in the city centre and learning to process the mangrove fruit in to snacks and promoting them.
Volunteers will learn about the mangrove and its ecosystem from the Pekalongan Mangrove Information.
Volunteers will stay with local families and will share cooking, cleaning etc. with the volunteer group.

Skills required for this role:

No skills are needed but strong motivation and interest in environmental conservation would be very useful.

Minimum time commitment per week:
10+ hour p/week
