Description

Volunteers give grinds once weekly during term-time. They give an hour tuition to second-level students, either at Junior or Leaving Certificate Level. Generally a volunteer will be matched with the same young person throughout the academic year. A positive, encouraging attitude is a must!

Currently grinds are occurring online, via Zoom. However, it is hoped that face-to-face grinds will occur again in the Rahoon Family Centre, in the Westside. There is some flexibility if a volunteer wishes to continue them online. 

Volunteers do not need to have a teaching qualification but a good level of understanding of the specific subject is required. Induction training and ongoing support is provided and there is always a Youth Worker available during tuition time. Support can be given in how to use Zoom. 

Is training provided?: Yes

Please note that Garda Vetting is required for this position.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

Supporting a young person around their curriculum in the chosen subject. For example, the tutor can give grinds in any one of the second level subjects. 

Providing positive feedback to the young person around their progress and abilities and working with them from a strengths-based approach,. 

Communicating with the youth worker around any changes in times or issues that arise. 

Skills required for this role:

Good interpersonal skills 

A positive attitude 

Time-keeping, commitment and responsibility. 

Details of time commitment needed for role:
Generally one hour weekly on a Monday or Tuesday evening but there may be flexibility around the evening.

Minimum time commitment per week:
1 hour p/week
