Solèy Haiti is an Irish NGO that aims to send a team of volunteers to Gros Morne (a rural town in North West Haiti) every summer. Volunteers undertake community development projects, such as construction of family homes, and facilitate summer camps for approximately 650 local kids. All of our projects are designed with the help of our local partners in Haiti to ensure they are meeting the needs of the community. Our projects also employ Haitians, providing a boost to the local economy, as well as allowing our volunteers an opportunity to learn from Haitians.
2020 Project Overview
The provisional dates for the 2020 summer projects are June 25th to July 27th.
On weekdays during the project, volunteers have breakfast around 6.45am and prepare for camp which starts at 8am. Each volunteer will have a class of 30-35 children, and will be assisted by 2 Haitian camp counsellors. The kids eat breakfast and lunch in camp, which leaves volunteers roughly 3 hours for lessons - which can focus on basic maths, basic English, arts and crafts, singing and dancing, and sports.
After lunch, volunteers will help out on the construction site from 2pm to 4.30pm. Solèy Haiti hire local tradesmen for the skilled labour, leaving the volunteers to do the manual labour. After construction, volunteers return to the accommodation for dinner and to prepare for the next day. There will always be at least one experienced team leader at the summer camp and construction site to provide help and guidance.
There are a few weekend day trips so that volunteers get to see a bit of Haiti and the culture, but generally the weekends are a chance to relax after the week!
Each volunteer must fundraise €2,800, including a non-refundable deposit of €400 to be lodged in December.
€2,800 may seem like a huge amount but it is totally manageable! All of our team leaders have years of experience with fundraising, with lots of event ideas and tips for the best way to reach the target. Its easier than you think and the team leaders will be there to help you along the way!
Group Meetings/Training Days
Once the volunteer team has been confirmed, there will be a group meeting in mid November outlining the programme for the year. This will be a chance to get to meet the other volunteers on your team. At this meeting you will also be informed of the dates of the two mandatory pre-departure training days as well as the date of the 'returning home' debriefing day after the project is completed. The training days are really important, not only are they a chance for you to learn about global development issues, but they also help prepare you for your trip to Haiti.
