About Suas Educational Development
Suas was founded in 2002 on a simple belief: literacy changes everything. Here in Ireland, we’ve helped over 5,400 children from disadvantaged communities to improve their literacy and numeracy skills and we’ve trained over 4,500 volunteer mentors to support them.
As a Maths Buddy you will help a child to develop their skills and confidence through one-to-one mentoring sessions. These take place in the child’s school during the term, usually in the mornings. Reading Buddies will engage in paired reading with students between the ages of 8 and 14, offering support and encouragement when required. Maths Buddies will work on very basic maths skills with students between the ages of 7 and 9, including reading numbers, addition, subtraction, and basic multiplication and division.

Please note that Garda Vetting is required for this position.
Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:
You will volunteer for one hour, twice a week for 7 weeks during the school term (2 hours a week for 14 hours in total), plus 1–3 hours of training and a short briefing session at the school in advance of the project starting. During this time you will be helping 2 students a week with one to one tutoring to help them improve vital basic maths skills.
The school is located in Castlegar a 20 minute drive from NUIG campus and transportation costs to and from the school will be covered by ALIVE at NUI Galway.
Skills required for this role:
There are no specific skills required. All training will be given by Suas.
You just need to have a passion to help children with their maths!
Maths Buddies will complete a 2-hour, in-person training session, followed by a short briefing session in the school the week before the programme commences.
Details of time commitment needed for role:
Tuesday & Thursday 10:00am - 11:00am You need to be available for both sessions.
Minimum time commitment per week:
2 hour p/week
