Introduction to the Leadership Initiative
This initiative aims to create, develop and sustain academic culture and programme socialisation through student leadership. This initiative will be developed through the interaction of three layers of people within an academic programme;
- Academic staff,
- Older programme peers appointed as student leaders, and
- First year students.
The approach will utilise a peer leadership structure to aid the transition of first year students into their programme. This will be facilitated through a structure of student leader support and academic staff mentoring of student leaders.
Why this Initiative?
Evidence suggests that initiatives with a student leadership/mentoring approach have the potential to result in positive outcomes for student engagement and retention. The ‘What Works' programme has identified that:
- Students prefer to receive their academic development and support within their academic department.
- Sharing concerns allows students to realise that many of their worries about studying are normal and/or shared by others.
- Peer mentoring can also provide students with access to useful academic development and support, especially as a mentor can appear more accessible to students than members of staff. (Building student engagement and belonging in Higher Education at a time of change: final report from the What Works? Student Retention & Success programme, 2012, p.42.)
First year students will be allocated an older student leader in their programme. Each student leader will meet with a small group of first year students a number of times over the first semester. Academic mentors from the programme will support student leaders.
Roles & Responsibilities:
1. Undertake mandatory leadership training which would include:
- Being a leader and working with first year students
- Delivery of content
- Boundaries and self-care
2. Initiate and maintain communication with allocated group of first year students
3. Assist first year student with questions that relate to transition into UL.
4. Meet with your first year group during suggested Semester 1 weeks.
5. Keep an attendance record at each meeting and share with the Program Coordinator
6. Complete a short online Review Form after each meeting with your group
7. Ensure that the first years in your group complete an evaluation at the end
8. Participate in a review of the initiative
