Voluntary Service International
Volunteers will work directly with youth from the juvenile education institution (Odgojni dom Bedekovcina) and children from the local elementary schools who are included in extended program focused on early prevention of behavioural problems.
Odgojni dom Bedekovčina has 69 years of experience in educating children and adolescents on early prevention of negative behaviours. They have been organising international voluntary projects in their institution for the last three years, and they’re widely recognized for their modern and unique approach to supporting children and youth with behavioural/emotional problems.
Accommodation: Volunteers will be accommodated in rooms with two beds that are located in pavilions within the facility. Each pavilion contains two toilets and two showers and a small kitchen. The volunteers themselves are responsible for cleaning the pavilion and will be provided with cleaning products, mops and brooms. Food for volunteers will be prepared in the facility (breakfast, lunch, dinner).
Approximate Location: Bedekovčina is a small town, located in the north west Croatia, with approximately 3,400 inhabitants. It is located around 50 km from Zagreb, approximately 1 hour away by train.
Voluntary Service International (VSI) is the Irish branch of Service Civil International, a worldwide peace movement that began in 1920. We work to promote peace, social justice, sustainable development and intercultural understanding. We do this through volunteering activities internationally and in Ireland. Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:
Volunteers are expected to prepare, implement and participate in activities which include working with elementary school students and adolescents (7-18 year olds). Activities will be interactive workshops (interactive games for getting to know each other, learning to work together as a team, playing and singing songs, making simple traditional meals etc., creative workshops (music, DIY and recycling, art workshops) and sports activities/outdoor games.
Details of time commitment needed for role:
Volunteers will work for max. 6 hours a day, and will have 1 free day during the project.
Minimum time commitment per week:
10+ hour p/week
Additional screening required for this role:
Motivation letter is required and it should include: experience in working with school kids and young people, a plan for the potential workshop that you as a volunteer would like to organize and materials that are needed for it.
