Description

Friendly Call Cork is a free service providing a phone call 5 days a week which is available to older people or individuals who may feel lonely, isolated and vulnerable in the Cork City and surrounding areas; the service specifically targets people with chronic illness or anyone who cannot engage in an active way in the community. 

We are looking for volunteers who will ring our Friendly Call clients daily. A volunteer will be assigned 2-6 Friendly Call clients, 2-5 days a week, to check in to see how they are and have a relaxed chat. You can commit to as much as one or two calls 3-5 days a week. The volunteer role is flexible and generally, we can fit calls around volunteer time.

Calls are done remotely by volunteers.

We can provide mobile phone to volunteer.

All volunteers must complete the Friendly Call Volunteer Application and Garda Vetting.

Garda vetting is done through Cork Volunteer Centre and takes approximately 2/3 weeks

Please note that Garda Vetting is required for this position which will be processed with you after you apply.

Tasks that the volunteer(s) will be expected to undertake:

•To ring clients to check in with them, make sure they are okay and chat to them about their day etc.

Check on how they are feeling, encourage exercise, positive activity.

•Any practical needs

•Keep a short log of each call

•Commitment required Monday to Friday, 1-2 hours per day, 4-6 calls each

Skills required for this role:

•Friendly and chatty

•Empathy

•Able to listen well or willing to improve listening skills

•Patience and understanding nature

•Respectful of independence

•Able to reassure

•To establish and maintain appropriate boundaries in the befriending relationship

•Referring concerns to Development Worker

Details of time commitment needed for role:
Calls are mainly made Monday - Friday Calls are also made over the Christmas holidays to our clients that we know are on their own and are very isolated.

Minimum time commitment per week:
1 hour p/week
