Welcome to Peer Connect! 
Global Galway is excited to introduce the Peer Connect Programme, designed to foster relationships between international and local students while providing essential support to newcomers. Our goal is to enhance understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures, helping international students acclimate to life in Galway. As a Peer Connect Volunteer, you’re not only making a difference in international students’ experiences but also representing the University of Galway. 

Recognition 

  • You’ll be presented with a Peer Connect Programme Volunteering Certificate for your volunteer contribution, enhancing your CV with practical experience, cultural insights, and new connections. 

  • We are happy to provide volunteers with references. 

Expectations 

  • Time Commitment: Minimum of 1 hour per week with your assigned students. 

  • Role Focus: Your role is to befriend and support the students, helping them feel welcome and settle in. As a Peer Connect Volunteer, you’ll engage in:  

  • Pre-Arrival Communication: Reach out to your assigned students via email before their arrival.  

  • Social Events: Organise and participate in events to encourage bonding and cultural exchange.  

  • Ongoing Support: Be their go-to contact for questions and provide guidance on local customs, amenities, and university life. 

  • Professionalism: Remember, you represent the University of Galway in all interactions with students. Aim to embody our values of inclusivity and community. 

Programme Meetings 

  • Welcome Meeting: Enjoy some refreshments while getting to meet your group and other volunteers!
